Why Calcium citrate?

Calcium is a very difficult mineral to absorb and it has been shown that we can generally only absorb a maximum of 500 - 600 mg calcium at any one time and this is for a person whose stomach has not been reduced. For the post-bariatric surgery patient, this is even more problematic as the amount of acid their stomachs produce is greatly diminished, and calcium requires acid to be absorbed. Calcium citrate is the calcium salt of citric acid and therefore is in itself acidic promoting the absorption of the calcium. The cheaper carbonate and gluconate forms of calcium are alkaline and therefore without sufficient stomach acids, very little absorption takes place and are therefore not recommended by bariatric surgeons or the various international bariatric societies.

Even without surgery, no-one can absorb more than 500 - 600 mg calcium at any one time. This means that even if you take sufficient calcium daily, if you take it all at once, you will only be absorbing about 500 mg of the total amount and this means that firstly you are wasting your money and you will become osteoporotic over time. Osteoporosis is a silent disease, which means when you suffer your first break, it is far too late and the damage has already been done, so taking enough calcium every day to prevent this is critical. Hence dieticians recommend you take the dosage over the course of a day.
